So, you have gone to Costco and stocked up on the essentials; toilet paper, ramen noodles, bread, meat, and milk. What are you going to do now? Was your plan to lock everything down and eat like a college freshman living in a dorm where the only tools to their disposal is a mini fridge and a microwave? No way! We are going to get through this and do it in style. So, let’s come up with a plan for those 2 pallets of ramen you have now. I am going take some inspiration from a recent Oscar winning movie and one you have or will watch during this Quarantine. The recipe is Ram-Don from the movie Parasite. Ram-Don is a misrepresentation of the dish which is referred to as chapaguri in South Korea. The dish combines two instant noodles; Chapagetti and Neoguri with sirloin to create a tasty noodle dish that will serve any budget. The recipe is simple cube your sirloin and sear. While the steak is searing boil the instant noodles in a pot of water. Once the beef is cooked to your liking set off to the side. When the noodles are al dente drain most of the liquid leaving some to create a sauce. Pour in the flavor packets and mix. Next add your seared sirloin, mix, and serve. That is a super simple, budget friendly recipe that will be perfect for dinner and a movie night when you watch Parasite. Let’s take it up another notch. Is your favorite ramen bar is not offering curbside pickup, but your cravings are not cured by the packets included in the instant ramen? I got you covered. Open a pack of your favorite instant ramen and ditch the seasoning packet. The key to a tasty bowl of ramen with those great umami flavors is a good broth. My go to is a bone broth preferably homemade but if not Bonafide Provisions makes a good broth and is available at most stores. Pour the appropriate amount of broth per noodles according to the package and bring to a boil. The broth with already have a good flavor but I like to take it even further with the addition of sesame oil and rice vinegar. Add some garlic, ginger, and scallions while the noodles cook. After the noodles finish cooking bring down to a simmer and add your favorite vegetables. I would include mushrooms, bok choy, and bean sprouts. Next add a protein. My go to is a nice soft-boiled egg. This adds some creaminess with the runny yolk. Finally, I like to top my bowl with a drizzle of siracha to give it a kick. Hopefully now you can appreciate your instant ramen a little bit more.
